For this paper, you may choose from all primary materials we have covered in class so far (except what you wrote about for the close-reading response) and pick a topic that you would like to explore further. You will re-analyze the text you want to work with while paying close attention to how your topic operates in it. This paper will pose an original and insightful argument and offer a thought-provoking reading of the primary text. Your argument will need to be well-supported by careful close readings of well-chosen quotes from the primary text. Ideally, your essay will reveal something new about the primary text that we haven’t covered in class. This does not mean, however, that you cannot use your past ideas. You may use ideas you have initially written about, but you should expand on them significantly by taking them in new directions. You are welcome to use any of our secondary readings, but the paper’s focus should be on the primary text.
